THREE CIRCLES:  THE ESSENTIAL MARTIAL ART

Created by Dr. Kelvin deWolfe, a 35+ year student of martial arts, Three Circles finds the basis for all styles of martial arts.

Beginning students welcome the foundation that Three Circles gives them, allowing them to master other styles with ease.  Advanced students, including MMA fighters, find Three Circles gives them a number of tactical advantages, and most importantly, a true understanding of combative arts.

Think of a rectangle, with a length roughly one and a half times its width–this ratio of 1.6:1 is called the Golden Ratio.  Often referred to as “nature’s number”, this ratio shows up in everything from plants and animals to people and planets. The Egyptians used the golden ratio in constructing the Pyramids. The Ancient Greeks used it in much of their architecture, including the Parthenon. During the Renaissance, artists used the golden ratio extensively in the composition of their paintings, as it was considered the most beautiful proportion.  Leonardo da Vinci called it “The Divine Proportion”.”

Why is this ratio so celebrated, and what does it have to do with martial arts?

Scientists posit that the golden ratio exists in nature as the most effective evolutionary proportion:  plants grow in the golden ratio; we’re built in the golden ratio. This proportion is aesthetically pleasing to us because it’s natural, it’s efficient, it’s balanced, it works.

Three Circles, a new martial art form, applies the principle of the golden ratio, creating a style that can best be termed “the DNA of Martial Arts.”

Developed by Dr. Kelvin deWolfe, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Three Circles uses movements based on the Five Phases: birth (wood), growth(fire), transformation (earth), decline(metal) and death(water).  These movements, as they exist in nature, are in the golden ratio.  Each successive movement has power over the other–much like the game of rock, paper, scissors:  Metal movement beats wood; wood beats earth; earth beats water; water beats fire;  fire beats metal and metal beats wood.

This template of martial arts is simple, stripped down, essential.  Students learn eight basic postures, all of which are a natural fit with the human body. Dr. deWolfe welcomes students of all levels to participate in his Three Circles classes.   No ranking, no belts, no egos. Just pure martial arts, bringing the body, mind and spirit into perfect balance.
